Back to School Shopping (Like a Boss)

*This is a sponsored post, but even if Old Navy wasn’t paying me, you better believe we’d be doing our back to school shopping there.

So, um, it’s August already. I’m not really sure how it snuck up on us so quickly, but it’s here. And suddenly everyone is talking back to school. To me, it seems a little premature. My little bubs doesn’t officially become a second grader until the second week of September.

But still, you better believe if there’s some sort of sale happening this cheap momma is diving in headfirst no matter how premature it might seem. When I heard Old Navy (one of our favorite stores) was having a $10 and under back to school sale (through August 14th, btw) I packed up the babes and drove on over.

Etsy Finds: Word

etsy finds: word pillow

I like words. I like homemade stuffs. I like homemade stuffs with words on them. Am I the only one?

I seriously get a huge kick out of products with clever or amusing phrases on them. I live for that shit. I’m even drawn to things with regular old words on them. I guess I just like words.

So I took to Etsy and collected a roundup of handmade goodies to feed my obsession (and maybe start yours?)…

Etsy Finds: Life’s a Beach

Etsy finds beach edition: whale towel hook

Today is my munchkin’s last full day of school for the year. I know a lot of you have kids who have been home on summer vacation for a few weeks now, but we’re just starting to get into summer mode here in the northeast.

For me, summer = beach. Even if we don’t get there nearly as much as we’d like to, I like to surround myself with as much beachiness (yes, I’ve made that a word now) as possible.

It’s so soothing and relaxing and, I don’t know about you, but I need that when the kids are home, hanging from my thigh and asking me what we can do next. Hell, with or without kids we can all use a little relaxation, no?

I collected a group of fun, handmade, beach-themed Etsy finds that can make you feel like you’re at the beach no matter how close you are to the coast. Enjoy…

Girls Room Decor Inspiration

girls room: striped walls

I love having girls. Aside from the insanely adorable clothes and doing fun things together like getting manicures or playing with glitter, there’s the fun of decorating their space.

We’re going to be moving in the near future and although we’re staying local, it’ll be a big adjustment. For one, the ladies will be sharing a room. They’re pretty excited about it. I’m a little leery about the whole sleeping thing (more importantly, the staying asleep thing) and storage, so I took to the internets and did a little exploring  for girls room inspiration. I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a lot of fun.

Conquering the Kitchen | Homemade Hummus

homemade hummus recipe

My husband makes pretty much the best hummus in the history of ever. Any time there’s a party or some sort of family get together, it is specially requested (especially if my mother or sister have anything to do with it).

I keep telling him he needs to bottle that stuff up and sell it, but he has absolutely no interest in the effort it would take. So I did the next best thing. I made him teach me how to make it. And since I love you so much, I’m showing you how to do it too!

about the momma

Hi! I'm Jen, a freelance writer and girl mom who loves reading the newest children’s books as much as I love a good psychological thriller. I believe fiercely in the power of kindness, empathy, and really good quality chocolate. When I'm not knee-deep in glittery crafts and girl talk, you can probably find me sprawled out on my couch in the middle of a Netflix marathon with dark chocolate smeared on my face. The struggle is real. Learn more about me here.

Instagram post 2191147872169389713_16560088 I unapologetically love our book advent calendar tradition. 🎅🏻🎄 It’s something that sounds completely extra but there are literally no rules except the ones you make.
I wrote a little something for @readbrightly about how we do ours (link in ye olde bio) but do you do anything like this? And if you don’t, do you have a favorite winter or holiday book? I’m always looking to add to our collection. 🤗

Instagram post 2186597266532541299_16560088 I have been a fan of @RebelGirls since they first started. We own all of the books, listen to the podcast, and now I am SO STINKING EXCITED to have a feature I wrote on their new online magazine, Boundless.@jothiramaswamy is a Harvard freshman who has been sparking girls’ curiosity in #STEM since she started her nonprofit, @thinksteaminc, at just 13. A #Westchester native born to Indian immigrants, Jothi started out by teaching girls how to code and has grown #ThinkSTEAM to a 501(c) with student ambassadors all over the country.I am so proud — especially in our current political climate — to be able to share the story of a non-white, second-generation American woman who is absolutely kicking ass in a male-dominated field.
You can find the story through the link in my bio.

Instagram post 2181043825777273523_16560088 Ellie’s Tooth Fairy set up has me feeling a little jealous. A bath is drawn, popcorn is on the stove, and there are even snacks inside the glitter tent. Where do I sign up? 🦷👑
