I am the Queen of Good Intentions. I always (always) have elaborate gift giving plans months in advance of any particular event. We’re talking handmade components and the kind of hands-on time I’m delusional to think I actually will be able to carve out.

And then I inevitably look at the calendar and say “Crap! That’s this week already?!” Because… life.

Sometimes I scale back my elaborate plans and come up with a semi-homemade version of what I had aspired to. Other times I scrap the idea entirely and head straight to Amazon because ain’t nobody got time for that.

So with Father’s Day less than a week away, I thought I’d present you with some options from both sides: fun, quirky gifts you can buy and a few you can DIY.

You know what I love almost as much as a handmade gift? A gift that does double duty. Combine handmade with something that can be used in multiple ways and this girl’s universe is totally blown—which is kind of why I thought I’d show you how to make a wrap bracelet that doubles as a necklace.

If you’re anything like me, an accessory that can be used in multiple ways will make you feel a little slick and like a total bad ass. Sprinkle that feeling around a little bit and use this tutorial to make a gift for your momma.

Call me hippie-dippie, call me Earth Momma, call me whatever, but I happen to think it’s kind of important to take care of this little planet we live on. And I think it’s incredibly important to teach our kids the same thing.

Like adults, kids totally tune out when you start lecturing them on the evils of littering or the dangers of water pollution. No one wants to be preached at. Instead, I like to fall back on the same rule of thumb I go by when it comes to teaching kids to be giving: make it fun and make it a normal part of their life.

If your kids see you throwing used bottles into the recycling bin regularly, they’ll start doing it too. If they watch you throw garbage out of your car window, they’ll do that instead. If you make a conscious effort to be environmentally friendly and to value nature and all of the little critters that live in it, your kids will be right there with you.

That said, it doesn’t hurt to model that behavior in a way that’s really fun. I put together a list of 20 kids activities to try out this Earth Day—or any day.

About an hour before the school bus rolls down the street every morning, if you listen very closely you can hear the collective groans and hair pulling of mothers everywhere as they try to fight their kids into presentable, weather appropriate outfits. Something that’s warm enough to ward off frostbite, yet pulled together enough to avoid implications of gross neglect.

If you don’t have kids or your kids are not quite old enough for an opinion on their personal style, trust me. The struggle is real.

Even my almost four-year old (who sometimes gets confused between shirts and dresses) is in on it. She likes to give me increasingly impossible hints as to the specific pieces she wants to pair together on a given day. Yesterday it was a dress with a dress (see also: sweater) over it, tights that were too small, and an additional sweater that I talked her out of. That was a good day. Today, I’m pretty sure she’s paying me back for being so agreeable by insisting on bright red pants and a lavender sweatshirt solely to injure my eyes.

And do not get me started on the eight year old. Let’s just say the girl is not intimidated by color or pattern. She slaps it all together in whatever way strikes her fancy on a particular day. She also doesn’t let me even think of doing anything with her hair.

Since Friday is Galentine’s Day and I believe that any excuse to celebrate female friendship is a fabulous one, I decided it was time to climb back into my mountainous mess of DIY supplies and make something amazing (and 90s inspired!) for my BFFs (girls, please feign surprise when I hand these to you later 😉 ). Since I have a seemingly endless hoard of jewelry supplies, it only made sense to go straight for the friendship bracelet.

I’m personally of the “any bracelet given in the spirit of friendship is a friendship bracelet” school of thought, so I was not about to tie myself down to braided summer camp wrist candy. Instead, I decided to step it up a notch and make really simple beaded bracelets.
