Paperback Posse | July’s Book Club Read: Luckiest Girl Alive

July's virtual book club pick: Luckiest Girl Alive

The people have spoken! And by the people, I mean our small but mighty group of book-hungry ladies. This month’s virtual book club pick is Jessica Knoll’s Luckiest Girl Alive!

In case you’re a major geek like me (and if you’re here, I’m kind of assuming you are), I decided this month to collect a bunch of info about the book and its author. It’s kind of my new favorite thing to do.

July's virtual book club pick: Luckiest Girl AliveFirst, I poke around on social media like a total creepster. Jessica Knoll (like June’s author, Emma Straub) is pretty active around those parts. You can check her out on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. I’m usually partial to Instagram because it’s a people watcher’s BFF.

Then I usually do a little Google search on both the title and the author, which is how I found out Jessica—I can call her that, right?—used to work for both Cosmo and SELF and that Reese Witherspoon is set to produce the movie adaptation (which, according to Facebook, Jessica is writing).

In case that’s not enough for you, I also found:

  • An interview with Bustle
  • An interview with SELF
  • A great write up in the Los Angeles Review of Books
  • A less great write up in EW

That should be a good start, no? If you find other fun stuff on the book or its author, feel free to drop it in the comments! And don’t forget to tag yourself reading the book on social media with our #paperbackposse hashtag.

Also, be sure to check back tomorrow for discussion questions for June’s book, The Vacationers. We’ll be talking about it over in the FB group for the rest of the week!

I still have another 70 pages or so to get through of this month’s book (The Vacationers), but it’s time for us to start thinking about what we want to read next month. Here are the choices, with lots of input from our Facebook group…

Paperback Posse | June’s Virtual Book Club Pick: The Vacationers

Paperback Posse June | virtual book club pick The Vacationers

Paperback Posse June | virtual book club pick The VacationersWe have a winner!

June’s virtual book club pick is Emma Straub’s The Vacationers (note: the paperback is coming out on June 2nd!).

I have a little secret. Promise not to get your panties in a twist? I read this one already.

I kept hearing about it last summer when I was in the middle of trying desperately to get back into reading. My little people and freelance work and trying to be a human made my once-beloved past time seem kind of impossible. But I decided I would slowly dip my toes back in the reading pool.

This book sucked me in and erased any thoughts of a slow, leisurely immersion. I loved that it was light and perfect for a beach read—which is essential when you’re trying to squeeze in a chapter here and there around everyone else’s schedule and before you can no longer keep your eyes open at night. I also loved that the observations in it dug a whole lot deeper than you expect a beach read to do.

I guess what I’m trying to say is, this book is absolutely perfect for a book club with a description like ours:

A virtual book club for busy ladies looking to fit reading in. Sometimes they finish the book, sometimes they don’t. Either way, we still have fun.

Our Facebook group is where the real fun happens, so make sure to request to join and I’ll add you! We’re an incredibly laid back bunch. I think you’ll like us.

Paperback Posse | June Book Club Vote

Paperback Posse virtual book club June vote

Paperback Posse virtual book club June voteIt’s been awhile since I’ve had my shit together enough to put together an actual post on the titles for our monthly Paperback Posse vote. For those of you not in our Facebook group, our virtual book club is still running strong—even if it’s tucked away from the rest of the universe. 😉

I think it’s helpful to do posts on the books that are up for a vote so that all of the information is in one place and you don’t have to go clicking all over the internets trying to figure out which book sounds the best to you. Agreed?

This month, I tried to give a wide range in style to try and keep everyone happy. Here are June’s choices…

Paperback Posse | The Girl on the Train Discussion Questions

The Girl on the Train discussion questions

The Girl on the Train discussion questionsI’m so excited that we can finally dig into this book! I’ve gathered a list of questions to help us talk about it (and spark some of our memories since most of us finished it weeks ago), but discussion does not have to stick to these questions.

Feel free to discuss here in the comments or over in our Facebook group, where I’ll slowly dribble the questions over the course of the next couple of days. The ladies in our little posse have told me they prefer discussing it over there (we’re closing in on 50 members!), so most of the commenting will more than likely take place there. That said, if Facebook groups aren’t your thing and you’d rather talk about it here, comment away!

about the momma

Hi! I'm Jen, a freelance writer and girl mom who loves reading the newest children’s books as much as I love a good psychological thriller. I believe fiercely in the power of kindness, empathy, and really good quality chocolate. When I'm not knee-deep in glittery crafts and girl talk, you can probably find me sprawled out on my couch in the middle of a Netflix marathon with dark chocolate smeared on my face. The struggle is real. Learn more about me here.
