summer adventures - Caramoor's Dancing at Dusk

I can’t for the life of me remember how I heard about Caramoor in Katonah, NY. It’s an absolutely gorgeous center for music and arts set on beautiful grounds with lush gardens and Mediterranean-style architecture that makes you feel like you’ve been transported to a faraway place. When I saw that they had family programs, including Dancing at Dusk in the summer, I knew we had to check it out.

We bought tickets for Dancing at Dusk: Filipino Music & Dance with Kinding Sindaw Melayu Heritage last week and it was so much fun.

The Dancing at Dusk performances take place at Friends Field, a big, open grassy area. We packed a blanket and a picnic dinner and set ourselves down in the middle of the action. Before the performance, there was a craft table where the girls decorated Filipino flags and made fans.

Once the show started, it was immediately obvious that this was not a typical performance. Kids were up and dancing right near the performers, who had an open dialogue with the crowd throughout the night. After performing a few gorgeous traditional dances that combined storytelling and movement with traditional Filipino instruments, the performers taught the kids how to do some of the dances. To say they loved it would be an understatement.

After the show, we headed over to the Ben and Jerry’s pop-up tent and… well… I’ll let the pictures tell you how Ellie felt about that.

The girl had ice cream on her ankles. That is the sign of a successful evening if you ask me. 😉

There is one more Dancing at Dusk performance scheduled this summer. You can see Dancing at Dusk: An Evening of Chinese Dance & Music with Ling Tang & Ba Ban on July 13th.

Tickets are $5 for children and $10 for adults (plus a service charge). Parking is free.

PS My 10-year old took a lot of these pictures. She’s ecstatic to be featured here.
