life lately: bike path walks

life lately: bike path walksIt’s been awhile since I’ve been able to give this little space o’ mine the proper attention, so I thought I’d come back with a little of what we’ve been up to lately.

To be honest, life has consisted a lot more of me manically trying to type away on my laptop while distracting the girls with something–anything!–so that I can work without interruption for even 15 minutes at a time. It hasn’t been much fun (or fair) for any of us, but the two major freelance projects I’ve been working on are just about done and I plan on lightening my load for a week or two to make up for all of the “Just let me finish this part!” the girls have been hearing lately.

That said, we have managed to squeeze in some fun and some outside time. The girls have taken a liking to going for walks on a local bike path. The picture above was from the last of many breaks we took. Not pictured is the stroller that saved me from carrying Ellie 90% of the way or the scooter that saved Samantha from boredom.

life lately: planting flowersAfter a lot of talking and very little action, we also finally planted some flowers outside. The girls were ecstatic about it for about two minutes before they didn’t like the smell of the potting soil or the dirt under their fingernails.

So momma took over and it looked really pretty for a week or so. Until I forgot to water them. Now we’re trying to nurse them back to life (and by “we” I mean me).

life lately: patioWe had a big (ugly), useless sandpit in the backyard that used to sit underneath an above-ground pool. As I mentioned in my Outdoor Living Inspiration post, I’ve been itching to turn it into a patio. With a barely existent budget, our best bet was to get a few yards of washed gravel to fill it in. A few hours of back-breaking labor and many blisters later, we have a space that’s functional—and for something other than a litterbox! 😉

This picture doesn’t do it much justice. It’s hard to tell that the rocks are all different shades of gray (the dark spots here are dirty bits that have since been washed with rain). I’m also slowly dressing it up. So far we’ve added an outdoor rug and a couple of pillows. I plan on adding a few more little floor pillows for lounging and possibly tackling a cinder block bench for extra seating. If I still have it in me, I might tackle prettying up the edges and possibly adding some lemongrass to detract mosquitoes.

life lately: putting the girls to workWith a new place to sit, I wanted to make sure we had enough chairs at the ready for parties this summer (like the mermaid and shark party that’s rapidly approaching). So I put the girls to work on some old chairs with a hose, a bucket of water and dish detergent and some rags. To say they had fun would be a drastic understatement. I even ended up with a sparkling clean car in the process.

life lately: lunching cousinsWith everything all together, we’ve been taking advantage of the new patio and enjoying the fresh air. My sister and my niece came over last week for lunch and the girls loved being able to run from the table to the outdoor toys. They even ate some watermelon in the grass (a dream of Ellie’s since she saw a picture of a little girl doing that at the supermarket).

life lately: potty trainingAnd then there’s potty training. I don’t really have much to say about that except, PLEASE SWEET JESUS LET THE POTTY GODS SMILE UPON ME!

What have you been up to?
