Kate Spade denim Kimberly dress

Kate Spade denim Kimberly dressIt’s been sooooo long since I did one of these splurge vs. steal type posts! Now, we all now I’m a budget-minded girl—except when I go to Target, but that’s a whole other story. If I see something cute that’s out of my price range, like say a $550 Kate Spade dress (at left here), I will hunt down something comparable at a price that I find more reasonable.

I love this dress. The a-line skirt goes with the whole classic silhouette thing I wrote about when I was trying to define my personal style. And the Peter Pan collar adds a nice touch of quirkiness that for some reason yells fall to me (does anyone else feel that way about them? Or am I just a big weirdo?).

I thought some bright accessories and a little texture would add the perfect unexpected touches to make this style mine. So, of course, I had to hunt down some options.

splurge vs steal: colorblockSplurge: Kate Spade denim Kimberly dress, $548.00 / Olivia + Joy Amelia Clutch, $82.00 Seychelles Siren Call flats, $95.00

Steal: ModCloth record time dress, $49.99 / BCBGeneration Kai The Higher Maintenance Clutch, $39.10 / ModCloth Boardwalk Lemonade sandal, $34.99

I’m a huge fan of blue with yellow. It’s so cheery and fun. And I love how it makes a dress that could be serious so much more playful. I think this look does exactly what I decided I need: it’s got a nice, classic silhouette, but the accessories add a fun twist. I might even like it better with a bag that incorporates more colors and a bohemian pattern.

On a different note: I’ve been having more trouble with the whole splurge vs. steal thing lately. Most of the time, my brain goes straight for the steals. My budget is small. I cannot afford a Kate Spade dress right now. Still, if the gap were closer I might just go with a splurge in a classic sort of piece like this dress. If it’s not incredibly trendy and it fits well, why not spend a little more for quality?

How do you guys decide when to go for the splurge and when to hunt for a steal?
