Better Together: Maxi Skirts, Cotton Shirts & Crossbody Bags

better together: maxi, cotton top, crossbody bag

In my little world, summer and style sometimes seem like an impossible combination. I mean, how exactly do you expect me to look remotely pulled together when my hair has become reminiscent of a Brillo pad, my makeup won’t stay on because of all of the sweat, and I’m continually covered in child residue (food, snot, Play Doh, you name it)?

Well, my friends, I’ve stumbled across a combo that’s been working for me through the first steamy bits of summer. I’m not sweating any less and the mysterious stains are still popping up, but at least I feel more together. And let’s be real. That’s the part that really counts, right?

Get the Look: Camila Alves

Get the Look: Camila Alves

In case you haven’t noticed, I’m a huge fan of laid back bohemian fashion–especially in the warm months. It’s easy and comfortable, which are two absolutely key points when I’m headed into the trenches (aka the grocery store) with my babies in tow.

Camila Alves, also know as Mrs. Matthew McConaughey, is a bona fide expert at making bohemian look pulled together–something that’s not always as easy as it sounds (it’s really not that difficult to end up looking like a homeless Olsen twin).

I guess you would have to be a bohemian champion when your husband doesn’t seem to own a shirt (note to the universe: I’m not complaining).

Etsy Finds: Eco-Friendly Vintage Style

Etsy finds: eco-friendly vintage style

Vintage is one of those words that just oozes cool. Even if I had no idea what it meant, I would like it. It’s like besotted and resplendent. They all just sound awesome. No? Just me? OK then. Let’s move right along. 😉

Vintage is awesome. It’s especially awesome right now, when everything seems new again. Whether you’re into Audrey Hepburn style (A-line skirts, skinny pants, classic stripes), bohemian 70s style (peasant blouses and long flowing skirts) or 90s grunge (floral dresses, flannel and over-sized cardigans), you can find something old that looks incredibly current.

You can even go a little crazy and mix them all together for vintage style that’s all your own: a flowy maxi skirt paired with a striped shirt (neon if you want to add some 80s in) and a big, cozy cardigan. The possibilities are endless and kind to both your wallet and the environment.

Buying vintage (especially locally) is oh-so eco-friendly. Not only are you keeping things out of landfills, but you’re not using new resources–you’re reusing old ones. Perfect retail therapy on Earth Day (or any day for that matter), if you ask me.

Take a look at some of the fab pieces that are available on Etsy right now…

Versatile Files: Plain White Tee

Versatility Files: white tee

For some of us (um, me) t-shirts are pretty much our uniform. I would say that 95% of the time I wake up in the morning and put on some sort of basic tee (usually v-neck and usually from Gap or Old Navy). Boring? Maybe. Pathetic? Nah.

As a busy momma running all over the place, a t-shirt makes sense. It’s easy, comfortable, and I never have to worry about a wardrobe malfunction. Still, it sometimes feels a little lackluster.

When I got an email from my sister with her newest edition of Versatile Files, I was pretty excited. Aside from all of the links she just wrote one sentence: Justification for buying a $25.00 white tee shirt from American Apparel.

Tell me more!

Personal Style | Spring Colorblocking

H&M cobalt skinnies (similar here) / H&M top / New York & Company cardigan (similar here) / SO leopard flats (similar here)

The weather is so weird right now. On Friday we had a school-closing snowstorm that dropped a few inches on us. By Saturday afternoon temperatures had gotten so mild and springy that most of it was gone.

Little bursts of warm(ish) sunshine like that make me even more impatient for spring. I just want to see some bits of green on those ugly, bare branches! And I want to be able to break out my flats again without kicking myself for it. Also, I don’t want to hear that dreaded “s” word again… at least until next winter (note to universe: I said winter. October is not winter!).

So what’s a girl to do? Continue trying to will spring into existence with bright pieces!

about the momma

Hi! I'm Jen, a freelance writer and girl mom who loves reading the newest children’s books as much as I love a good psychological thriller. I believe fiercely in the power of kindness, empathy, and really good quality chocolate. When I'm not knee-deep in glittery crafts and girl talk, you can probably find me sprawled out on my couch in the middle of a Netflix marathon with dark chocolate smeared on my face. The struggle is real. Learn more about me here.
