Bright, Bold Summery Lips

I’m generally not a lipstick person. It’s mostly because the interior half of my bottom lip loses the color almost immediately, making me constantly paranoid that I’m suffering from an extreme case of stripe lip. And why wear something that makes you totally self conscious?

The thing is, I’m kind of obsessed with bold lips right now. It seems to go hand in hand with my hardcore coral crush. I want bright, bold coral-colored lips. I don’t know why, but I love it!

I recently bought two new glossy lipsticks to give this summery trend a try. I picked up Cover Girl NatureLuxe gloss balm in anemone and Revlon Colorburst lip butter in Tutti Frutti. Both give you a glossy punch of color and leave your lips feeling smooth an hydrated (that’s a major pet peeve of mine: lip color that makes your lips feel all dry and gross).

The Cover Girl product has SPF 15, which I thought was kind of awesome. It goes on nice and smooth and is sort of a cherry color. Depending on how much you layer it on, it can be subtle enough to say “OK fiiiiiine” to your begging six-year old who won’t stop pulling on your leg until you let her put a little on or it can be a little bolder for momma.

The Revlon product is definitely the bolder of the two. But while I like the color and the smooth, creamy coverage I was thoroughly disappointed with the fact that a chunk of it slid off the top during my first application, leaving me with a chunky smooshed mess. I would absolutely swear by their lip butters if it wasn’t for that teensy little malfunction. Now every time I got to put it on there are chunks breaking off on my lips, which is pretty annoying. I’m hoping I just got a defective one but I’m not so sure I want to spend the extra money to see.

Have any of you tried Revlon lip butters? I’m interested in seeing if anyone else had the same issue. And if not, tell me what your go-to lip brand is!

Obsession of the Week: Josie Maran Argan Color Stick

I’m in love. I read about Josie Maran’s Argan Color Stick while blog hopping not that long ago (I can’t for the life of me remember where, but if it was your blog, let me know!) and immediately put it on my Need to Try list.

I’m a sucker for multipurpose products, so when I read that it can be used on lips and cheeks (or even eyes if you’re feeling adventurous) I was intrigued. Add to that the fact that it’s gentle, eco-friendly, and helps women’s cooperative programs in Morocco, and I was completely sold.

When I found myself with a gift card to Sephora burning a hole in my pocket (thanks Maura!), it was at the top of my list of products to buy.

At $22 for .55 oz of product, it was definitely a little pricier than  my typical makeup purchase (I’m generally a drug store makeup girl). It’s fragrance free but has a sort of strange scent, which I’m assuming is a combination of beeswax, cocoa and some of the oils used in it.

The smell doesn’t linger though and I almost completely forgot about it once I put it on. It’s smooth and creamy and dewy looking and leaves your skin with a very natural looking glow.

I bought it in Petal Pink, which is a light and rosy color. I used it on my cheeks and lips and immediately felt like it made me look a little more fresh and awake (something which is completely necessary after only getting a few hours of sleep).

I definitely plan on keeping this one in my beauty product rotation–even if it means using it sparingly since I’m so cheap! 🙂

Lip Love

lip love: outlast all day lipcolor

lip love: outlast all day lipcolorLipstick usually doesn’t like me. I’ll find a color I love, smear it on and within a half hour the interior half of my bottom lip is colorless. Highly irritating–especially when those little tubes aren’t cheap!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not really a lipstick girl. A swipe of gloss is usually good enough, but once in awhile a little pop of color makes you feel brand new–until you catch a glimpse of your reflection in the bathroom mirror at work and see that it looks like half of your lip is having an allergic reaction.

Until recently the closest thing I found to something that looked like lipcolor rather than an ailment was Covergirl’s Outlast Lipstain. While it doesn’t last nearly as long as anticipated, adding a little gloss to it made my whole striped-lip look way less noticable than any other lipcolor product I’ve tried (note to anyone thinking of trying it: I liked the idea of a matte stain but my lips felt so dry I had to add gloss).

Since I was closest to happy with Covergirl’s Outlast, my interest was piqued when I saw their Outlast All-Day Lipcolor while hunting for makeup to wear for my sister-in-law’s wedding.

lip love: dusty rose 5301It comes with two tubes. The first is the lipcolor, which comes with a little wand applicator. You apply it to clean, dry lips (no lip liner!) and let it set for sixty seconds without any blotting or rubbing your lips together. Once the color is set, you apply the second tube, which is basically a clear gloss.

Can I just say I’m in love? I was pleasantly surprised that I applied it once in the morning (I got Dusty Rose 530) and when I was getting ready for bed that night, I had to rub Vaseline on my lips to take off the remaining color. That has never happened to me before.

Now, admittedly, the color was beginning to cake and wear off a bit in the middle of my lips. But I only applied the top coat once! I think that if I reapply for moisture/gloss during the day I’ll have no issues at all.

Love it!

about the momma

Hi! I'm Jen, a freelance writer and girl mom who loves reading the newest children’s books as much as I love a good psychological thriller. I believe fiercely in the power of kindness, empathy, and really good quality chocolate. When I'm not knee-deep in glittery crafts and girl talk, you can probably find me sprawled out on my couch in the middle of a Netflix marathon with dark chocolate smeared on my face. The struggle is real. Learn more about me here.
