Beauty, self care, Treat Yo Self

Treat Yo Self | Honey Lemon Mask

DIY honey lemon mask

Treat Yo Self is a series that focuses on inexpensive indulgences that make you feel good without feeling guilty. Because when momma’s not happy, nobody is happy.

Lately, I’ve seen facials and all sorts of DIY beauty business on Pinterest that uses honey as an ingredient. I was always intrigued, but I never tried it because… well, because putting honey on my face sounded disgusting.

I mean, how gross would it be all goopy and stuck in my eyebrows? And how hard would it be to get off? Also, why would I want to stick my hand in a jar of honey and smear it all over my face?!

Well, apparently BECAUSE IT’S AWESOME.

I’m one of those people who starts out as a skeptic, thinking that something is absolutely ridiculous and a waste of my time. Then, slowly but surely, I need to know for myself. I need to experience the ridiculousness firsthand. I need to get to the bottom of it (hello, shampoo-free movement).

So I looked into this whole honey-on-your-face thing a little bit more to try and figure out why anyone would want to do it in the first place. Turns out there are a bunch of reasons.

Beauty | Going Shampoo Free

going shampoo free (no poo)

going shampoo free (no poo)

I know the title of this post probably has about half of you turning your noses up and doing a little shudder. I get it. The idea of ditching what is widely considered a personal hygiene staple might seem totally bizarre. I mean, I’m sure I thought it was crazy the first time I heard about the whole “No Poo” thing (that term is so gross).

But, as with most things, I was slowly pulled towards it until I finally decided to brave it. And you know what? I haven’t washed my hair with shampoo in nine months—and not once has anyone questioned my hair routine (and believe me, there are people in my life who would have no problem asking why I’m such a greaseball).

DIY Frozen Wall Art: Let It Go

DIY Frozen wall art: Let It Go

So yesterday I was telling you all about my crafty girls night out. Today, I’m going to show you the (easy!) Frozen wall art I made from my painting.

Obviously, my painting was far from a masterpiece but the girls were super excited when they woke up the next morning and I told them I made it for them. Even more exciting was the fact that I told them I was going to turn it into a Let It Go painting. Cue squeal fest (we have a lot of those around here).

Treat Yo Self | Peppermint Brown Sugar Body Scrub

treat yo self | inexpensive indulgences

treat yo self | inexpensive indulgencesI don’t know about you, but it’s very rare that I look out for ol’ number one (that would be me). I run around like a lunatic trying to make sure everyone else is happy, but I totally fail at taking a second to take care of myself.

I decided this should probably change. When I’m all stressed and neurotic, I’m not my best self. I’m a yelling, short-tempered mess. But if I take just a few minutes every now and then to treat myself, it’s like a breath of fresh air.

So, inspired both by my stress and Parks and Rec, I give unto thee a brand spanking new series: Treat Yo Self. Only, unlike the TV characters, my treats are going to be inexpensive indulgences that don’t give me hives about my bank account.

For this first post, I turned to the biggest divas and treaters of themselves I know: my daughters. My ladies live and breathe by treat yo self rules. They now believe that all baths should include epsom salt, coconut oil, and peppermint essential oil—at the very least. When they’re feeling extra extravagant there are scrubs, masks and colored water (Ellie is not a fan of bubbles in the tub so they generally skip those).

One night I was sitting by the tub, watching them soak up all that luxury when I had a thought: why don’t I do that? We’ve been making our own scrubs and masks for a while now (a great kit to get girls started is the SmartLabs All Natural Spa Lab. My sister got it for Sam for her birthday one year and we’ve used it over and over and over again) and I know that it’s simple and cheap. Plus, it doesn’t take long to slather a scrub on as a little pick me up.

3 DIY Gift Box Ideas

DIY date night in gift box

I’m all for handmade and DIY. But sometimes you just procrastinate a little too much and suddenly the gift giving occasion is four days away and you have three days that are exploding with plans and activities. You don’t really have time to sit down and knit a blanket or put together that epic scrapbook you’d been planning.

This, my friends, is the time to go semi homemade.

I’m kind of obsessed with the idea of gift boxes right now. It shouldn’t be surprising since I’m always a fan of themed gifts (I just bought a birthday boy a monster puppet making kit with a monster book to go with it—and you can bet your butt I’m going to wrap it in Monsters U wrapping paper). And gift boxes are the perfect way to go semi homemade.

Themed gift boxes are kind of awesome because you can take a broad idea and make it work for your budget it while tailoring it for the person you’re giving it to.

Take a look at what I mean…

about the momma

Hi! I'm Jen, a freelance writer and girl mom who loves reading the newest children’s books as much as I love a good psychological thriller. I believe fiercely in the power of kindness, empathy, and really good quality chocolate. When I'm not knee-deep in glittery crafts and girl talk, you can probably find me sprawled out on my couch in the middle of a Netflix marathon with dark chocolate smeared on my face. The struggle is real. Learn more about me here.
