8 Feminist Etsy Finds to Celebrate Women’s History Month

Women's History Month - feminist - Creating Monkies

In celebration of Women’s History Month, I put together a few of my favorite feminist Etsy finds—from t-shirts and wall art to an enamel pin and a onesie. These pieces are perfect for celebrating womanhood all year round.

Confession: I don’t understand women who say they’re not feminists.

I mean, how is that even possible?

Being a feminist means you want the sexes to be treated equally. That’s it.

Like any group, there are endless opinions on the right way to achieve this. You’ll agree with some and think others are batshit crazy. And that’s fine. But, at the end of the day, if you’re a woman and you don’t think women should have the same rights and opportunities as men, I just don’t get it.

My daughters should have just as many options and chances to succeed as your sons. Their ideas should be taken seriously and they should not be constantly told to smile or have their worth measured by their looks. We are not there yet.

I think part of the problem is that the word feminist has gotten so entwined in politics that to some, it has a negative connotation. To them, it means being liberal and angry and burning your bra and growing out your armpit hair and hating men. And, yes. Some feminists do and are all of those things. But it’s not an essential part of feminism.

If you disagree (and if you agree too!), feel free to sound off in the comments. I’m more than willing to discuss it further.

In the meantime, I couldn’t let March come to a close without a little dose of feminist love in celebration of Women’s History Month. I put together a roundup of some of my favorite feminist pieces I’ve stumbled across on Etsy.

Why Hillary Clinton’s Presidential Nomination is Huge for Our Daughters

“And because of Hillary Clinton, my daughters—and all our sons and daughters—now take for granted that a woman can be president of the United States.” —Michelle Obama

“And because of Hillary Clinton, my daughters—and all our sons and daughters—now take for granted that a woman can be president of the United States.” —Michelle Obama

Whatever your opinion on Hillary Clinton’s politics or character, there’s one thing that you have to admit. Her nomination is huge for women and the daughters that we’re raising.

It’s one thing to teach our daughters that they can be anything they want to be when they grow up. My girls don’t question this as truth. They fully believe in their potential and that they can do anything a boy can do—although I do discourage peeing while standing because ain’t nobody got time for that mess.

But it’s a completely different thing to be able to sit down and point to a specific moment in time when a woman was nominated for president by a major party.

Bad Ass Babes | Celeste Barber

Ah, the pressures of school drop off. #celestechallengeaccepted #funny #victoriasecret

A post shared by Celeste Barber (@celestebarber) on Feb 7, 2016 at 12:39pm PST

Celeste Barber has been killing it lately. If you haven’t heard of her, she’s the 33-year-old Australian comic who posts hilarious parodies of celebrity pictures on Instagram (you know that’s sure to be a hit with this InstaAddict, right?). I won’t lie to you: at first, I thought maybe it was a little mean. The whole mercilessly poking fun at people thing didn’t seem to gel with my fierce belief in raising women up—until I realized that it totally does.

Celeste takes highly stylized, completely staged photos of some of the most beautiful women in the world and points out to us regular girls that they’re not real. Nothing about them. From the poses to the hair and make up, there is nothing natural about them. No matter how bad the girls in them might want you to believe it, they’re not candid shots. They’re specifically designed to show these women at their absolute best.

And pointing out that little fact again and again and again? It makes us mere mortals feel less terrible about ourselves in comparison. In fact, it makes us laugh our asses off at the ridiculous lengths some people will go to to get a flattering angle. And for that, she is a Bad Ass Babe.

Good Samaritan Saturday | Free the Girls

free the girls bra drive

“No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted.” —Aesop

In hopes of talking less and doing more when it comes to helping others, I’ve decided to start a series I’m calling Good Samaritan Saturday. Each Saturday morning, I’ll post a little something you can do to start your weekend out with positive vibes by helping to lift someone else up…

free the girls bra drive

Ladies, let’s talk bras. If any of you are like me, you have a collection of them that you don’t actually wear. I have a rotation of about three bras that I can wear every day—let’s be real: I have small kids and no interest in dinner and a show. Anything overly lacy and skimpy has no practical place in my life right now. So they sit. And they take up space in my drawer.

Enter Free the Girls, a non-profit organization that collects gently used bras and donates them to survivors of sex trafficking as starting inventory for their own business selling the bras.

Is that not a fantastic idea?!

Improving the lives of women (many of whom were sold into slavery as children) and repurposing items that would have sat untouched in your drawer before finding their way to a landfill to do the same? Amazing.

I’m absolutely in love with this idea and am hoping to hold a bra drive this summer—so start collecting unwanted bras, local friends! If you don’t live in New York’s Hudson Valley, you can check for drop-off locations in your area.

about the momma

Hi! I'm Jen, a freelance writer and girl mom who loves reading the newest children’s books as much as I love a good psychological thriller. I believe fiercely in the power of kindness, empathy, and really good quality chocolate. When I'm not knee-deep in glittery crafts and girl talk, you can probably find me sprawled out on my couch in the middle of a Netflix marathon with dark chocolate smeared on my face. The struggle is real. Learn more about me here.
