Summer Adventures | Dancing at Dusk at Caramoor

summer adventures - Caramoor's Dancing at Dusk

The Summer Adventures series focuses on affordable summer fun for families in Westchester and the lower Hudson Valley. It’s all about exploring our own backyard and is the perfect resource for planning a killer staycation or finding something awesome to do this weekend. Interested in more local love? Head here.

summer adventures - Caramoor's Dancing at Dusk

I can’t for the life of me remember how I heard about Caramoor in Katonah, NY. It’s an absolutely gorgeous center for music and arts set on beautiful grounds with lush gardens and Mediterranean-style architecture that makes you feel like you’ve been transported to a faraway place. When I saw that they had family programs, including Dancing at Dusk in the summer, I knew we had to check it out.

We bought tickets for Dancing at Dusk: Filipino Music & Dance with Kinding Sindaw Melayu Heritage last week and it was so much fun.

I’m Not Fancy

Guys, I’m literally dying laughing right now. Literally. Like, my heart is about to stop from laughing so hard.

You know that Iggy Azalea song Fancy? OK, I didn’t until the girls and I finished our book on tape and my iPod wasn’t charged and we had no other option but silence or radio. Also, when I say silence I mean that in the loudest way possible—because a house with two girls is never silent.

So to buy myself relative “silence” (ie space in my own head with chatter blocked ever-so slightly with the radio, thus creating more noise), I flipped that radio dial so freakin fast. For my sanity.

Fancy came on and the chorus immediately lodged itself in my brain. So much so, in fact, that I’ve been torturing the girls with breaking out into song for at least a week now. As soon as I start Sam covers her ears and shrieks. But Ellie has been feeling it.

It gets me every time.

When my friend Rena (who has been my Golden Goddess of Link Sharing lately) sent me The Girls with Glasses doing a parody called Not Fancy, I was immediately intrigued. And I have not stopped giggling to myself about it.

Top 5 Tuesday | 90s One Hit Wonders

I’m a big fat nineties nerd. I love it. All of it. From the floral dresses with combat boots to Saved by the Bell and Dawson’s Creek, the 90s are my jam. (I know. I’m a dork).

A bunch of people on my Facebook feed have mentioned watching Dawson’s Creek lately and that has sent me down Nostalgia Lane. I’ve decided to force you down that road with me with five of the best 90s one hit wonders. I dare you not to sing along…

Bad Dad | 5 Songs to Get Your Kids Indie Cred and Teach Them Important Lessons

Bad Dad

Bad DadBecause Bad Dad was more popular than anticipated (and because he’s a part of my chaos and I feel the need to spread that joy to you, dear readers), I decided to let him come back for another installment.

Bad Dad is a music snob. Let me just put that out there. The girls and I are a little disappointing to him because we’re just as happy to Roar with Katy Perry as we are to belt out some Iron and Wine. This kills him a little inside. To make up for it, he decided to spread his love of music to you–and help teach your kids some lessons in the process.

Again, please address all hate mail to Bad Dad.

I don’t know about you, but we have two daughters, and as such, the music they tend to listen to is horrible, horrible, pop garbage. I was one of those expecting parents that was like “No way is my kid going listen to crap. I’m going to have the coolest toddler on earth, she’s going to sing Grizzly Bear and be all into Pavement and it’s going to rule.”

But you quickly learn that little kids like catchy songs. It doesn’t matter if they’re stupid and putrid with horrible messages about female body image, partying, whatever. So here are 5 fun and catchy songs to try and get your kids into awesome bands and teach them important lessons.

Gotta Love That BriWi…

So, I’m still taking a little bit of time off to regroup and recharge, but I couldn’t resist popping in to share this little gem.

You know I love Brian Williams. He’s prettiest much the hottest newsman ever (also, I love his daughter (Marnie from Girls), in case you were curious) and he’s pretty funny too.

That’s why when I saw a link for him “rapping” on Jimmy Fallon, I knew it was going to be gold.

I know I can’t be the only one. Who else loves the BriWi?

about the momma

Hi! I'm Jen, a freelance writer and girl mom who loves reading the newest children’s books as much as I love a good psychological thriller. I believe fiercely in the power of kindness, empathy, and really good quality chocolate. When I'm not knee-deep in glittery crafts and girl talk, you can probably find me sprawled out on my couch in the middle of a Netflix marathon with dark chocolate smeared on my face. The struggle is real. Learn more about me here.
