InstaAddict | Small Business Edition

InstaAddict | ivoryk on instagram

Since we’re heading into holiday crunch time, I thought it would be fun to highlight some of my favorite small business Instagram accounts. I follow a lot of them. I actually didn’t realize how many until I sat down to put this post together.

Personally, I’m not a fan of accounts that are nothing but product shilling. I totally get that Instagram accounts are a marketing tool. But my favorite accounts are a mix of business and personal. They make us feel like we know the people behind the business and sometimes give us a little look at their process—which, actually works for the business because it totally builds loyalty.

Here are a few that I love.

Working Bitches | Procrastination Techniques

professional procrastinator

professional procrastinatorI regularly refer to myself as the reigning queen of awkward because, well, I am (hello awkward oversharing and averting my eyes from casual acquaintances in public because I’m sure they don’t recognize me and I don’t want to be caught in a weird half wave). But there’s another place that I rule pretty solidly: the Province of Procrastination (was that awkward enough for you?!). This region is one of my absolute specialties. I consider myself a top level expert.

Why do I procrastinate? Sometimes it’s because the task I’m avoiding is large and unappealing. Or boring. I generally avoid boring. Sometimes it’s a phone call or email I’m just not feeling. Sometimes I’m overwhelmed (OK, most times I’m overwhelmed). And other times, I just can’t pin the reason down. I have a pretty solid suspicion that I’m not the only one feeling all of these feelings.

But when you sit back and think about it, procrastination does nothing but delay the inevitable. Sometimes it even makes the inevitable more difficult. And it always makes us agonize over the task at hand much longer and much more dramatically than necessary.

Momtrepreneur | BabyNav Baby Planners

Momtrepreneur: BabyNav Baby Planners

When I started my Momtrepreneur series a  year or so ago, my vision was to spotlight mommas with handmade businesses. I wanted to find out what inspired them and how they make things work and hopefully give myself a little push while I was at it. I never envisioned venturing out into other types of businesses—until I got an email from Julie McCaffrey of BabyNav Baby Planners.

Julie’s passion for baby planning and her desire to help out other moms in any way possible was immediately clear. So was the value of her business to expectant parents. One quick peek at the BabyNav Baby Planners website had me itching to learn more about Julie.

Momtrepreneur: King Soleil

Momtreprenuer: King Soleil rainbow and clouds rug

Momtreprenuer: King Soleil rainbow and clouds rugThis is only the third edition I’ve done in my Momtrepreneur series, but I have to tell you: I’m loving them. I have asked all of these ladies the same questions and have never been bored by their answers. They’re incredibly inspiring.

This month, I’ve got Morgan from King Soleil shedding some light on starting a business. I stumbled across Morgan’s shop when it was featured somewhere on the internet (possibly Babble’s Top 50 Etsy Baby Shops). First, I fell in love with her work and then I fell in love with her mission.

King Soleil was born when Morgan started preparing a nursery for her first baby. When she found the decor she stumbled upon to be lacking, she started crafting her own pieces by repurposing, refinishing, upcycling and reinventing.

Could this woman and her work be any more up my alley? I think not. But let her tell her story. I hope you’re even half as inspired by it as I am!

Momtrepreneur: internaht

Annett Winkelmann of internaht

Annett Winkelmann of internahtThis month’s Momtrepreneur is a mother of three (which includes a set of twins!) from Dresden, Germany.

Annett worked at a large German financial institute for nearly two decades before leaving her position and founding internaht, a children’s clothing company.

Full of bright, graphic, high quality pieces, internaht clothing is built to last–and perfect for handing down from child to child.

I asked Annett a few questions to learn more about her work and her process–and hopefully get some helpful pointers for other ladies out there looking to start their own businesses.

about the momma

Hi! I'm Jen, a freelance writer and girl mom who loves reading the newest children’s books as much as I love a good psychological thriller. I believe fiercely in the power of kindness, empathy, and really good quality chocolate. When I'm not knee-deep in glittery crafts and girl talk, you can probably find me sprawled out on my couch in the middle of a Netflix marathon with dark chocolate smeared on my face. The struggle is real. Learn more about me here.
