Arm Party + A Jewelry Giveaway! (CLOSED)

arm party featuring Mikuti bangles

I have slowly but surely developed a strong attraction to the color yellow. Just a few years ago I would’ve told you I hated it. I’ve always been drawn to more watery hues, but yellow has nudged its way into my heart.

The problem? It’s not a color that I can wear. I’ve talked about it more than once, but yellow makes me look like I’m on my deathbed. It completely washes me out and leaves me looking seriously ill. Not a cute look.

But I’ve recently discovered a way around that dilemma: accessories. In small doses, yellow and my skin tone play nice. That’s why when Favery, a fun new designer jewelry community that hosts weekly sales on curated collections, offered to send me a couple of bracelets to style, I knew I had to go for the yellow!

H&M cobalt skinnies (similar here) / H&M top / New York & Company cardigan (similar here) / SO leopard flats (similar here)

The weather is so weird right now. On Friday we had a school-closing snowstorm that dropped a few inches on us. By Saturday afternoon temperatures had gotten so mild and springy that most of it was gone.

Little bursts of warm(ish) sunshine like that make me even more impatient for spring. I just want to see some bits of green on those ugly, bare branches! And I want to be able to break out my flats again without kicking myself for it. Also, I don’t want to hear that dreaded “s” word again… at least until next winter (note to universe: I said winter. October is not winter!).

So what’s a girl to do? Continue trying to will spring into existence with bright pieces!

Pintervention: DIY Matte Nail Polish

DIY matte nail polish

DIY matte nail polishMatte nail polish is kind of a big deal right now. It’s a change from the typical glossy manicure and it can give you pretty cool effects when you’re going all out with the nail art. Since I’m a cheapo, I thought it would be fun to do a Pintervention on some of the DIY matte nail polish recipes I’ve seen floating around.

The one I pinned turned out to be nothing more than a photo from Real Simple and I couldn’t find the actual post. Still, it seemed simple enough. The caption said “Add corn starch to clear polish to get matte finish.”

Since it sounded so easy, I decided to kick the whole experiment up a notch by combining that first pin with another one that showed how you can make your own nail colors by mixing eye shadow with clear polish (note: the caption on that pin says to just combine eye shadow and clear polish for a matte nail color, but when you read the actual blog post that it’s pinned from, you learn that she used a matte top coat). Combining unrelated tutorials is usually what leads to my catastrophic pin fails, but this time wasn’t so bad.

Etsy Finds: Geometric Shapes

etsy finds geometry: this loves that necklace

I’m not really a math person. To my husband, that translates into me saying that I’m bad at it. But I’m not. I always got good grades in math. It just wasn’t one of the subjects that came easiest to me.

In high school I always liked the problems that were like little puzzles to solve. Finishing them made me feel satisfied and gave me a sense of accomplishment. But as a whole? I’m more of a word girl.

But that doesn’t mean I can’t be a little obsessed with geometric shapes. Lately they’re everywhere and I’m finding myself totally smitten. Maybe it’s because they’re a little like those puzzle questions I loved: all angles and curves that can fit together perfectly if positioned just right. They can worked together in harmony or they can jut into all the wrong places.

Whatever the reason, I want geometric patterns on everything. So I turned to Etsy.

Versatile Files: Peplum Top

peplum fashion sketch

It’s been a while since we’ve done one of these posts (since October actually!). But my sister, Michele Frechette, and I finally got it together and are teaming up again to show off a trend that is surprisingly versatile.

As I said in the first Versatile Files post, I’m way too cheap to spend my money on pieces that have incredibly specific uses. If it can’t be dressed up and dressed down, I generally can’t be bothered–especially when it comes to trendy pieces that could end up looking dated by next season. Versatility is key and it’s our mission to show you pieces that will work for you no matter where you need to go.

This time it’s the peplum top.

about the momma

Hi! I'm Jen, a freelance writer and girl mom who loves reading the newest children’s books as much as I love a good psychological thriller. I believe fiercely in the power of kindness, empathy, and really good quality chocolate. When I'm not knee-deep in glittery crafts and girl talk, you can probably find me sprawled out on my couch in the middle of a Netflix marathon with dark chocolate smeared on my face. The struggle is real. Learn more about me here.
