self care is not a luxury

Hey girl. Treat Yo Self is a series (inspired by my beloved Parks and Rec) that focuses on inexpensive indulgences that make you feel good without feeling guilty. Because when momma’s not happy, nobody is happy.

I don’t know about you, but I almost always feel guilt about doing something exclusively for myself. It’s almost as if I’m doing something illegal—stealing precious time or resources from my kids like I’m some all-important creature with no regard for anyone but herself.

Well, it turns out, I am important.

If I’m a third-rate version of myself, what exactly do I think I’m giving them in the first place? Because a cranky and irritable sloth with a short fuse and a tendency to yell is not exactly Mother of the Year, is she?

I’ve been listening to Elizabeth Gilbert talk a lot lately (more on her tomorrow) and the one major thing I keep taking away from her words again and again is that you can’t take care of anyone else if you don’t take care of yourself. And failing to take care of myself is only teaching my daughters to grow up and put themselves last.

That teeny little perspective shift makes a world of difference.

So I’m going to get back into the habit of making sure I’m happy and that things are all good with momma. I’m going to start with baby steps and hope that I get a snowball effect going.

And I’m going to start with my handmade, all natural COCOandLI soaps.

It may sound silly, but this is exactly the type of simple little indulgence I need to put me on a path to self care.

We’ve been so busy lately that I find myself sitting there at the night thinking a) did I take a shower today? and b) if not, when was the last time I did? This is not new to mothers. But my kids are not infants. I should be able to steal some time to shower. And I shouldn’t have to consider it stealing.

So tonight I’m going to take my ginger cinnamon clove bar (because it smells just like fall) and I’m going to lather up in it’s smooth, creamy deliciousness. You’ll know how much I’m feeling this whole self care vibe by whether or not I shave my legs. 😉

If you want to try out COCOandLI’s delicious-smelling, creamy, dreamy soaps, come on out to my Halloween party at My Gym this Friday. Liana of COCOandLI will be there and she was nice enough to offer up mini bars for our swag bags!
