Treat Yo Self | homemade ice cream sandwich

Hey girl. Treat Yo Self is a series (inspired by my beloved Parks and Rec) that focuses on inexpensive indulgences that make you feel good without feeling guilty. Because when momma’s not happy, nobody is happy.

Most of the day I try really hard to fuel myself with healthy, clean foods. Yes, there are the occasional stress-induced dives into a bag of chocolate chips. Yes there is fro yo. A lot of fro yo. Still, most of the time I make good choices.

That said, when the sun sets, the girls are in bed and my husband and I are collapsed on the couch binge-watching TV shows, Momma wants some chocolate. Momma needs some chocolate.

Dark chocolate squares carried me through the winter but the other day I tried something new that has totally captured my heart. Even more impressive, it captured my husband’s heart too.

This deliciousness started out with a hardcore love of Talenti gelato. The coffee chocolate chip caught my eye one day when I was racing through BJs hungry (never a good idea). I grabbed it and fell madly in love.

Last week, my husband was away for work. To cheer the girls up while he’s away, we’ve taken to doing two things: 1) we have an elaborate candlelit tea party for dinner (by elaborate I mean we eat things like mac and cheese, apples with peanut butter and salad on fancy plates while the candlelight dances all around us) and 2) I let them sleep in my bed.

These tea parties always include by dessert before we start bedtime rituals. I had some of my favorite Talenti in the freezer and we also had some gluten free graham crackers. For some added crunch, I decided to dip a graham cracker into my gelato.

Um. Cue drool fest. That little concoction right there was straight up heavenly.

It wasn’t long before I decided to skip the dipping and just put a nice big scoop on top of one cracker before sandwiching another on top. It was a sticky, messy, melty little rectangle of awesomeness.

When my husband came back and we were finishing off Mad Men, I immediately asked him if he wanted to try one. I was surprised when he said he did, mostly because he’s a carb guy who’d rather chomp on some pretzels than indulge in my chocolate squares. I was even more surprised that he loved it and has become my partner in DIY ice cream sandwich devouring crime.

While it’s definitely not the healthiest way to treat yo self, it’s definitely one of my favorite ways to do so. 😉
